Picture This: Things Are Different (Review)

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

‘Things Are Different’ is the newest single from the Irish pop and rock band Picture This. It’s the second single released after their album MDRN LV. It is likely that a third studio album is on the way this year, as their previous album was released back in 2019, and before that their debut album Picture This, was released in 2017.

The song starts quite stripped back, showcasing some beautiful synths, enabling the vocals to stand out more than the instrumentation. This way, the lyrics are up front and centre. Behind the upbeat vocal melody and the catchy beat, the lyrics actually appear to represent the events of the past year, including the Covid-19 pandemic, along with other traumatic events that occurred throughout 2020.

“Some of us will drift apart

While others stay together”

The song begins with these lyrics, which many people including myself more than likely relate to. The pandemic has caused many countries around the world to initiate lockdowns. This has separated loved ones, family and friends. There are a few other lyrics within the song which almost seem to be linked to the lockdowns. Some people have gone crazy with having to be inside constantly, whereas others may have found something important. Found love, found loss, possibly found themselves.

“And I know the world's on fire

But there's beauty in the flame”

These lyrics from the chorus stand out to me. The artist has acknowledged the fact that the world is in chaos at the moment. However, within this chaos many incredible things can be created. The art for the single also seems to represent the world being on fire, trying to show the beauty of it through the art as well as the music.

“I'll be the light

If you follow me, I will be everything you need

I'll be the leader

If you want it, I promise that I will set you free”

Overall, the song is very uplifting, and these lyrics really give you the feel of an anthem. Music is a beautiful way of giving people hope, something to look to the future for. Sometimes, a few words of encouragement can make a big difference to someone. I think that the choice to end the song on these lyrics was a well-thought-out decision, to leave the listener with that thought that someone out there is willing to be the one to lead them out of what may be a dark time for many.
